How to Use Hair Oil: Three Gazing Rituals, Your Way
If you're like most of us, you own more hair products than you have routines. A shelf of good intentions, and a "what am I supposed to do with this?" feeling every wash day.
Here's what I believe after years of caring for my own hair: the product is only half of it. The other half is the ritual. Visible results come from repeated care, not from doing something dramatic once. That idea is the whole philosophy behind Gazing Green, and it's why the Hair Elixir can be used three different ways.
And here's the part I want you to hear first: you don't have to do all three. Pick the one you'll actually repeat, or the two that fit your hair, or all three if that's your style. There's no wrong combination.
First, what's in the bottle
The base of the Gazing Green Hair Elixir is moringa oil. It's blended with grapeseed oil and squalane, which help keep the texture light, and finished with ylang ylang, geranium, red clover and lavender for a minty-floral scent that makes wash day feel like a moment for yourself. We don't add any drying alcohols, like SD alcohol or isopropyl alcohol, to this formula. Used consistently, it's made to nourish the scalp, help reduce breakage and soften strands.
Ritual one: scalp-first care
This is the everyday step. Part your hair in a few sections, place a small amount directly on your scalp, and massage it in with your fingertips for a minute or two. Then style as you normally would.
How often: anywhere from daily to about three times a week, depending on your hair. If your hair runs dry, you'll likely want to lean toward daily or every other day. If it runs oily, start closer to twice a week and adjust or once a week on wash days.
A note on amount: less is more. Use the measured amount—half the dropper.
Ritual two: the warm oil treatment
This is the slow, indulgent one, and it turns wash day into a real moment for yourself.
- Apply the Elixir to your scalp, the way you would for a traditional oiling.
- Leave it on for 30 minutes. Put on a robe, make tea, answer nothing.
- Wash it out on wash day with your usual shampoo.
For extra hydration: add a few drops to your favorite hair mask, cover your hair with a shower cap (or sit under a dryer or steamer) for 30 minutes, then rinse and wash as usual.

Ritual three: shine and seal
This is the finishing step. After a silk press or a wash-and-set, add two to three drops through your lengths and ends for shine, softness and a smoother, more polished finish. If your hair is on the oilier side, two drops is plenty. Your hair is your own, so start with a little and see how it responds.
Build your own ritual
Every one of these works on its own, and they mix and match. A few ways people could build a routine:
- Scalp-first only: a few drops on your scalp two or three times a week, and nothing else.
- Wash day + shine and seal: the warm oil treatment before you shampoo, then two or three drops to finish after you style.
- All three: scalp-first care through the week, a warm oil treatment on wash day, and shine and seal after styling.
Choose the version that fits your hair type, your schedule and how much time you want to spend. The point is repetition, not perfection. Write your version on your calendar for the first month and keep it steady.
What to expect (honestly)
Hair changes slowly, and everyone's is different: your texture, your routine, your water, your stress, your sleep. Used consistently, the Elixir is made to nourish your scalp, help reduce breakage and soften your strands, and many people notice their hair feeling different before they see anything else. But we won't promise you a timeline, because we don't believe in quick fixes. Give your ritual time. Individual results vary.
A few safety notes worth saying out loud: if you have a sensitive scalp, do a small patch test first. And if you're dealing with shedding, irritation, patchy areas or a scalp condition, please see a dermatologist. A hair oil is a care step, not a treatment.
Start with one
If all of this feels like a lot, pick one ritual and repeat it for a month. Then add another only if you want to. Healthy hair isn't rushed. It's a ritual, and it doesn't have to be boring.
